Unleashing Creativity: My Journey in Designing a Spinel Ring [Part 2]

A year has passed since I last shared the beginnings of this bespoke ring, and the inspiration behind choosing a Pinkish Red Spinel as the main character of my very first bespoke jewellery piece. In the quiet moments between sketches, revisions, and thoughtful decisions, the design has finally revealed its final form.

From Words to Creation
Every brainstorming process begins with keywords, and for my bespoke ring, I envisioned something bold yet elegant, and versatile enough to be worn effortlessly on any occasion. I began by exploring the foundation of the design: should the stone rest on a single and refined band, or would a more voluminous form better express its presence?
As I reflected on the initial inspiration behind this journey, I discovered a special element that could capture my passion for jewellery design – the Infinity Sign (∞) – symbolising my endless devotion to the craft.
While drafting this loop-like structure, I asked myself, “How can I make this form even more interesting?” The answer came instantly: asymmetry. Rather than keeping a flat structure, I decided to add layers within the infinity sign, elevating one curvature to overlap with another. Yet something still felt missing. “Perhaps some diamonds to create contrast?” I thought. Hence, the top curvature was set with diamonds in a delicate rail-pavé setting.
The Heart of The Design
Now came the pivotal question: how should I incorporate the Spinel?
This stage took me considerably longer, as it would define the very personality of the ring. I kept asking myself: “Should the Spinel sit in the center, or closer to the side? Should it be set vertically, or perhaps horizontally?” Over and over, I weighed each possibility, knowing every choice would shape the character of the piece.
I reviewed back to the beginning of this journey, revisiting the keywords. “Something limitless… a galaxy?” A new idea suddenly sparked in my mind. I started playing with the placement of the Spinel, surrounding it with white diamonds in different sizes to explore balance and depth.
The design ultimately took its final form by setting the Spinel with eight diamonds (you may guess why eight), arranged in a gentle zig-zag that introduces rhythm and movement to infuse the piece with a sense of dynamism and celestial energy.
The End Result
Now, this Pinkish Red Spinel rests upon a deeply meaningful ring, cradled by a constellation of white diamonds –like stars orbiting a glowing core – while the gracefully crossing bands echo infinite paths in a galaxy.
As this journey comes full circle, the ring stands as a testament to exploration, emotion, and thoughtful design, and a timeless reminder to me that the most meaningful creations are born when we dare to dream beyond boundaries.
