Where Kiriko Meets Gemstones: The Story Behind Our Takumi Collection

Updated: Dec 12, 2025

This festive season, we’re especially excited to introduce something very close to our hearts — the Takumi Collection. It’s a small series of one-of-a-kind pieces, each centred around a gemstone that has been hand-cut in the Kiriko style, inspired by the beautiful patterns of traditional Edo Kiriko glassware.

If you’ve ever seen Edo Kiriko cups or vases, you’ll know how mesmerising they are: sharp lines, geometric cuts, and the way light seems to dance through them. We wanted to bring a little bit of that magic into jewellery — and that idea eventually became Takumi.

Bringing Kiriko into Gemstones & Jewellery

Edo Kiriko isn’t something you usually associate with gemstones. It’s most known in the world of glasswork, where artisans carve deep, vibrant patterns into crystal. Translating this craft into gemstones is much more delicate, and honestly, a lot harder than we imagined at first.

But in Japan, there’s a place where people do this with incredible skill — the Kofu area. Many of Japan’s best gemstone craftsmen work quietly there, and each brings decades of experience to their benches. When we met artisans who were willing to adapt Kiriko-style faceting to coloured stones, it felt like the perfect match for what Fujimori Kajita stands for.

Cut by Hand, One facet at a Time

Every gemstone in the Takumi Collection — from Peridot to Pink Tourmaline, Tanzanite, Citrine, and others — is individually shaped and cut by hand. If you look closely, you’ll notice patterns that almost feel architectural. And because they’re cut one at a time, no two stones are ever alike.

There’s something very special about that. In a world where so much is mass-produced, Takumi is our quiet reminder that human hands still make beauty in the most patient, dedicated ways.

Why This Collection Means So Much to Us

Fujimori Kajita has always been about more than just jewellery. A lot of what we do is rooted in our Japanese heritage — whether it’s the techniques passed down through our ateliers, or the way we approach colour, balance, and design.

The Kiriko stones in Takumi carry that same spirit. They’re modern, bold, and full of life, but the philosophy behind them is deeply traditional: respect the craft, honour the material, and let the maker’s skill shine through.

In many ways, this collection feels like a bridge between the past and the present — between age-old Japanese artistry and the coloured-stone jewellery we love creating today.

Carrying Culture Through Craft

More than anything, Takumi is our way of celebrating the craftsmanship we grew up admiring in Japan. The artisans in Kofu, the Kiriko tradition, and the long history of Japanese faceting have all inspired us in different ways, and we hope these pieces let you experience a little of that too.

If you love jewellery with a story — something made with intention and heart — we think you’ll feel that connection in Takumi.

The TAKUMI collection will be available at our Takashimaya Store from 1 Dec 2025.
