Emerald, the mesmerising green variety of beryl, has captivated people for centuries with its rich green glow and timeless aura of luxury. Yet, choosing the right emerald remains a common challenge for consumers. From colour and clarity to origin and treatment, every detail plays a significant role in defining the stone’s beauty and true value.
In this article, we showcase our latest emerald collection, along with tips to guide you in selecting your perfect emerald.

1. Colour
Colour is the most defining factor in an emerald’s value. These gemstones are known for their vibrant green hues, often with a subtle bluish tone. Ideally, the colour should be neither too light nor too dark. A highly sought-after emerald showcases a perfect balance between brightness and depth to achieve a vivid and lively appearance.
What makes Emeralds unique compared to other green gemstones?
While other green stones can look too bright, yellowish, or overly dark, emeralds are valued for their deep, refined green with a soft bluish tone, often described as “emerald green.” This colour is vibrant but elegant, with a natural depth that stands out without being overpowering. With their gentle glow, emeralds have a unique visual character that makes their colour instantly recognisable and highly desirable.
2. Clarity
Unlike most precious gemstones, where clarity is paramount, emeralds are admired for their natural inclusions. Far from being flaws, these characteristics are embraced as a hallmark of authenticity.
Because emeralds almost always contain inclusions, a high-value emerald is defined by inclusions that are not overly visible. Whether small or evenly distributed, the inclusions should not significantly affect the stone’s transparency, nor should they make the emerald appear cloudy or dull. Instead, the best emeralds maintain a vibrant colour and lively appearance despite their natural internal features.

Each necklace showcases a fancy-cut emerald, accented with fancy-cut diamonds to create a soft yet elegant silhouette. The emeralds are eye-clean, displaying excellent clarity and a vibrant, saturated green hue that captures light with remarkable depth and life.
3. Treatment
Emeralds are commonly enhanced through oil treatment. This treatment is a traditional and widely accepted practice used to improve clarity by minimising the appearance of surface-reaching fractures.

The degree of oil treatment is usually classified as none or insignificant, minor, moderate, or significant. This shows how much clarity-enhancing oil has been used on an emerald.
This classification also affects value. Minor oil is the most common, as it improves clarity while still keeping the stone’s natural look. Emeralds with no or only insignificant oil are much rarer. They are often more valuable because they show exceptional natural clarity with little to no enhancement, making them especially desirable to collectors.
4. Origin
Origin plays an important role in determining the value of an emerald, as it usually reflects the stone’s quality, colour characteristics, and rarity.
Colombian Emerald: Highly prized for their vivid, pure green color and strong market reputation, often commanding higher prices.
Zambian Emerald: Typically display deeper, slightly bluish-green tones.
Brazilian Emerald: Generally lighter and more varied in appearance.
Although origin can enhance desirability and prestige, it is ultimately the combination of origin, color, and overall quality that defines an emerald’s true value in the market.

This necklace features a vivid green Russian emerald, elegantly surrounded by a halo of diamonds. A pear-shaped diamond is delicately set at the top, elongating the design and adding a refined, graceful touch. The chain is adorned with diamonds in a bezel setting, creating a striking contrast and a subtly playful yet sophisticated visual effect.
Did you know? Russian emeralds have a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Similar to Zambian emeralds, they usually have a slightly bluish-green hue, but with a silky softness that gives them a distinctive charm. Although Russian emeralds are rarely found today, they are treasured for their historical significance.
