There is something special about the places we come to call home.

Beyond the familiar streets and buildings, it is often the people we meet, the small discoveries we make and the everyday encounters that give a neighbourhood its character.

When we were putting together the second issue of Sai Magazine, I wanted to explore this sense of belonging through the places that have become part of Fujimori Kajita's story.

In Sai Vol. 2 — When Life Encounters Colours, our Neighbourhood Guide takes readers through three places we call home: Ann Siang Hill in Singapore, Taichung in Taiwan and Sangenjaya in Tokyo, Japan.

Each neighbourhood has its own rhythm, culture and charm. Yet, what connects them is the sense of community that grows through the people and businesses who share these spaces.

Celebrating Our Neighbours at Ann Siang Hill and Club Street

It's been two years since we opened the doors to our Ann Siang Hill Boutique, and over time, we've grown to love the charm and character of this neighbourhood. From its quiet mornings to its lively evenings, there is something special about the independent businesses and familiar faces that bring this little corner of Singapore to life.

In our Sai Neighbourhood Guide, we introduced some of these places, including two of our neighbours, Maxi Coffee Bar and Club Street Laundry.

Maxi Coffee Bar

Maxi Coffee Bar

A familiar name in the neighbourhood, Maxi Coffee Bar has been serving thoughtfully crafted specialty coffee since 2018. What began as a small coffee bar has since grown into a larger space, just a short walk from its original location.

Beyond its coffee, Maxi has become a gathering place for those who live, work and spend time around Ann Siang Hill and Club Street. On any given morning, you'll find regulars stopping by for their daily coffee, friends catching up, or someone simply enjoying a quiet moment before the day begins.

Despite the changes over the years, Maxi continues to bring a sense of warmth and familiarity to the neighbourhood, reminding us that sometimes, the simplest daily rituals are what make a place feel like home.

Club Street Laundry

Nestled at the corner of Club Street and Ann Siang Hill, Club Street Laundry brings a fresh perspective to the neighbourhood while preserving a little piece of its history. Its name pays homage to Hup San Laundry, a laundry business that once occupied the space, reflecting the changing character of this historic neighbourhood.

Today, the restaurant offers modern Australian cuisine with global influences, bringing together thoughtful cooking and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. With its distinctive setting and inviting interiors, it has become a place for friends, colleagues and neighbours to gather over a leisurely meal or an afternoon conversation.

While the neighbourhood continues to evolve, Club Street Laundry is a lovely reminder of how new beginnings can coexist with old stories, adding another layer to the character of Ann Siang Hill and Club Street.

Both have their own stories and personalities, and together with the many independent businesses around us, they contribute to the charm of the neighbourhood we call home.
